Why We Bake Dacromet at Exactly 300 °C — and Measure It in Eight Zones
By Chen Guoqiang, Founder · Ningbo Precision Fastener · 6 min read
Most buyers assume Dacromet is "just another coating". It is not a paint layer — it is a zinc-aluminium-chromium flake coating, and the difference matters most on grade 10.9 and above.
The failure mode nobody mentions in a quotation
Electroplated zinc introduces hydrogen into the steel lattice. On 10.9 bolts, that hydrogen can cause delayed brittle fracture — a bolt that passed every incoming inspection can snap months after assembly, under no unusual load. Dacromet is applied as a dispersion and cured thermally, so no hydrogen is introduced at all.
Why 300 °C is not a range, it is a target
- Above ~320 °C the flake structure begins to degrade — corrosion resistance drops.
- Below ~280 °C the coating does not fully cure — it looks correct and fails in service.
- The usable window is therefore roughly ±20 °C, across a moving oven line.
Our curing oven is zone-controlled: eight independently measured zones rather than a single averaged setpoint. An averaged oven can report 300 °C while one end sits at 265 °C — which is exactly how under-cured batches escape.
What to ask any coating supplier
- Is the oven zone-controlled, and can you see the per-zone log for my lot?
- Is salt spray data from a production batch or from a prepared sample?
- For grade 10.9+, what is the documented hydrogen embrittlement mitigation?
